The Cost of Discipleship: What It Means to Follow Jesus

Discipleship is at the heart of our Christian walk, yet the true cost of following Jesus is often overlooked. The words of Jesus in Luke 14:26-27,33 serve as a reminder of what it means to be His disciple:

"If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple… In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples." Luke 14:26-27,33

I know! Reading this verse can definitely be sobering and eye-opening... but these verses truly showcase the essence of discipleship and total commitment to Jesus, no matter the cost. But what does this really mean for us today? Let's break it down!

Understanding the Cost of Discipleship

1. Surrendering Earthly Priorities

Jesus’ words in Luke 14:26 may seem extreme.. and hard to swallow. However, His call to “hate” family and even one’s own life is not a directive for literal hatred but a demand for undivided allegiance and commitment to Him. When compared to our love for Jesus, every other relationship should pale in significance. Discipleship means that Jesus becomes the supreme priority over family, career, comfort, and personal goals and ambitions.

Here at Mosaic, we see this principle in action as believers around the world choose Jesus above all else, sometimes at great personal sacrifice. The church remains the hope of the world, and our commitment to discipleship strengthens it. Learn more about personal sacrifice from a believer in South Asia here.

2. Bearing the Cross Daily

Luke 14:27 underscores the importance of carrying one's own cross. To take up our cross means to die to ourselves, our desires, our comforts, and our need for control. It is a call to radical obedience, even when it leads to suffering or rejection.

For those engaged in missions, this often means stepping into the unknown, serving in difficult places, and prioritizing the Bible over personal security. It is a path that Christ Himself walked, and He calls us to follow. Learn more about our mission work here.

3. Letting Go of Material Attachments

In Luke 14:33, Jesus makes it clear: "Those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples." This challenges the modern pursuit of wealth and comfort. Discipleship requires an open hand and a willingness to surrender possessions, status, and financial security for the sake of the Kingdom of God.

We encourage this sacrificial generosity by investing in local churches and communities, ensuring that resources are used to bring transformation. When we let go of our material attachments, we gain something far greater...eternal treasures in Jesus! Read about the story of the building of the Donsol Church in the Philippines here. The Rewards of True Discipleship

While discipleship is costly (as we learned above)...it is also deeply rewarding. Jesus promises that those who lose their lives for His sake will find true life.

For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. - Matthew 16:25

The rewards of discipleship include:

  • Intimacy with Jesus: A deeper relationship with Jesus as we walk in obedience. Right now, we are in the middle of our Lent Journey together to grow close to Jesus. Learn more here.

  • Purpose and Fulfillment: Living for God’s Kingdom brings meaning beyond temporary pleasures.

  • Eternal Impact: Investing in souls and the spread of the Bible and the light of Jesus leaves a lasting legacy.

Discipleship in Action: How You Can Respond

Jesus' call to discipleship is not just theoretical; it requires action. You ever hear that saying, "You Gotta Talk the Talk and Walk the Walk?" Here are ways to live out Luke 14:26-27,33 in your daily life:

  1. Examine Your Priorities: Is Jesus truly first in your life? Are there relationships, possessions, or ambitions that compete with your devotion to Him?

  2. Step Out in Faith: Whether it’s sharing the Bible, serving in missions, or supporting local churches, discipleship is an active commitment.

  3. Give Sacrificially: Support ministries like our local church, ministries you believe in, or even Mosaic International that empower local churches and change lives. Your generosity directly impacts real people in real ways.

  4. Embrace Suffering for Jesus: Be willing to endure hardships for the sake of the gospel, knowing that your faithfulness glorifies God.

Counting the Cost & Embracing the Call

The cost of discipleship, as outlined in the Bible, is steep, but the eternal rewards far outweigh the temporary sacrifices. Jesus calls us to follow Him wholeheartedly, placing Him above all else. Here at Mosaic, we believe in fostering deep, Christ-centered relationships, telling the stories of God’s transformative work, and providing proof of impact.
