At Mosaic International, we often witness the weight of grief firsthand in the communities we serve. From an elderly man in Tanzania who recently lost his eyesight to a woman who wept when given a simple gift of food, these moments remind us that pain and loss are a part of every human story. Yet, in those same moments, we also see God’s Word come alive, the promises that He is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18).
Whether grief takes the form of loss, loneliness, or hardship, scripture reminds us that God draws near, heals, and offers eternal hope through Jesus Christ. As you reflect on your own journey, may these Bible verses for grief bring peace and strength in your time of need.
Below are twelve powerful scriptures that speak directly into times of grief, offering peace, strength, and eternal perspective.

1. Psalm 34:18 – God Is Near in Sorrow
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Grief can feel isolating, but this verse assures us that God is not distant. He is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are weighed down with sorrow.
2. Matthew 5:4 – Comfort for the Mourning
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”
Jesus reminds us that blessed are those who mourn because God’s comfort meets us where tears fall.
3. Revelation 21:4 – No More Tears
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.”
This powerful passage from Revelation 21 gives us hope: God Himself will one day tear from their eyes every sorrow. The grief we experience now will not last forever.
4. Psalm 147:3 – Healing for Broken Hearts
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
The God who formed the heavens also tenderly cares for our pain. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds, offering restoration where we thought healing was impossible.
5. John 14:27 – The Gift of Peace
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.”
In grief, fear and anxiety often take hold. Yet Jesus says, “I leave with you my peace.” His peace steadies us, even when the storm rages.
6. 1 Thessalonians 4:13–14 – Hope in Resurrection
“Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death… For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.”
Paul reminds us not to be uninformed about those who sleep. As believers, we have hope that those who die in Christ will rise again and live even though they die.

7. Psalm 23:4 – The Valley of the Shadow
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.”
In the valley, God’s presence brings courage. Grief is a dark shadow, but His rod and staff bring comfort.
8. 2 Corinthians 1:3–4 – The God of All Comfort
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort.”
God is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ and the Father of compassion. He comforts us so we can, in turn, comfort others walking through sorrow.
9. Romans 8:38–39 – Love That Cannot Be Broken
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life… nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God.”
Even in grief, we can be sure that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ, not death, not pain, not even despair.
10. Lamentations 3:22–23 – New Mercies Each Day
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning.”
Every day in grief feels heavy, but God’s mercies are fresh with the sunrise. He sustains us when strength runs out.
11. John 11:25 – Life Beyond the Grave
“I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.”
Jesus comforts us with eternal hope: those who believe in Him will live even though they die. Death does not have the final word.
12. Philippians 4:7 – Peace Beyond Understanding
“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
When words fail, when answers don’t come, His peace guards us in grief. It is a supernatural calm that only God can give.
Holding on to Hope in Times of Grief
These Bible verses for grief remind us that God is near to the hurting. He heals the brokenhearted, He promises a future where every tear will be wiped away, and He assures us that nothing can separate us from His love.
When you feel crushed in spirit, remember that you are not alone. The Lord Jesus Christ walks with you, binds up your wounds, and offers eternal hope. Grief may linger, but so does His presence.
