Anxiety and fear can make even the strongest faith feel shaky. But the Bible doesn’t leave us alone in these struggles; it speaks directly into them. From the Old Testament to the New, Scripture offers promises of peace, strength, and presence when worry sets in.
Here are 10 powerful Bible verses about anxiety and fear, along with the profound truths they remind us of when we feel overwhelmed.
1. Isaiah 41:10
"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
This verse reminds us that fear doesn’t get the final say, God does. You are not alone in your anxiety. He is with you, strengthening you and holding you up with His righteous right hand.
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
When fear tightens its grip, this passage invites us to hand it over. Through prayer, gratitude, and trust, we exchange anxiety for the peace of God, a peace strong enough to guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
3. Psalm 27:1
"The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?"
Fear shrinks when we remember who God is. He is not just our salvation. He is our shelter, our stronghold, and our light in the darkest places.
4. John 14:27
"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."
Jesus doesn’t offer temporary calm, He offers enduring peace. His words are just as true today as they were to His disciples: Do not be afraid.
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified... for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."
This call to be strong and courageous isn’t about willpower; it’s about presence. God walks with you, even through fear, and promises never to abandon you.
6. Matthew 6:34
"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
Anxiety often lives in the future, in the what-ifs and what-thens. But Jesus calls us to trust Him with today. Let tomorrow worry for tomorrow. God’s already there, too.
7. Psalm 23:4
"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me."
Even in life’s darkest valleys, God’s presence is constant. His rod and your staff are symbols of guidance and comfort, proof that fear doesn’t get the final word.
"God has said, 'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.' So we say with confidence, 'The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?'"
Fear loses power when we know we are not alone. The Lord is my helper, that truth is enough to quiet every lie anxiety tries to whisper.
"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
Fear doesn’t come from God. When it shows up, we can remember that He’s given us something better: power, love, and the clarity of a sound mind rooted in truth.
10. Romans 8:38–39
"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons... nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Anxiety often tells us we’re unsafe, unloved, or out of reach. But God’s love is unshakable. Not even fear itself can separate you from it.
When Fear Comes, So Does God
The Bible never promises a life without fear, but it promises a God who enters it with us. In each of these verses, we’re reminded that anxiety doesn’t have the authority to define us or determine our steps... only God does!
